Employment tribunal claims come with a lot of jargon. These are plain-English definitions of the terms you are most likely to meet - from ACAS Early Conciliation and the ET1 through to Polkey reductions and the Vento bands. Each links to a fuller guide where one is available.

Law status: The Employment Rights Act 2025 is expected to extend the standard limit to 6 months for most claims, currently targeted for around October 2026 - but it is not yet in force and depends on commencement regulations (breach-of-contract claims are expected to stay at 3 months). Until then, the 3-months-less-1-day rule applies.

Law status: The qualifying period for ordinary unfair dismissal is currently 2 years. The Employment Rights Act 2025 is expected to reduce it to 6 months for dismissals from 1 January 2027, subject to commencement regulations - it is not a day-one right and is not yet in force.
